The GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science courses share the same subject content as Unit 1 and Unit 2 of GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics. Therefore the questions on the past exam papers of those courses can also be used as preparation for GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams.
The “Unit 5” and “Unit 6” papers can be found on the GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science pages.
Students choosing Triple Science in their Year 9 Options will study three science-based GCSEs, including Biology. At Fallibroome, the exact course followed is from the AQA exam board: AQA GCSE Biology (8461).
The course will take two years to complete and at the end students will receive a grade between 9 and 1.
The course is examined through two 105-minute exams in the summer of Year 11. There is no other assessment.
Biology Paper 1: Tuesday 15th May 2018 (pm) (1hr 45mins)
Biology Paper 2: Monday 11th June 2018 (am) (1hr 45mins)
Statement of Entry
The school enters students for their exams with the exam board and then students are given (in February) a Statement of Entry to check that no mistakes have been made. Please note that this final check is the students’ responsibility and that Fallibroome cannot be held accountable for any errors that are not picked up at this final stage.
A correct Statement of Entry for GCSE Biology looks like this:
AQA GCSE in Biology 8461H (for students taking the Higher Tier exams)
AQA GCSE in Biology 8463F (for students taking the Foundation Tier exams)
Students have one specialist Biology teacher and they have 5 lessons of Biology per fortnight on their timetables. The course is taught in topics, of varying length, with a test at the end of each one.
Homework will be set on a regular basis by the teacher.
It is important to note, however, that in addition to whatever homework is set explicitly by the teachers, all students need to develop the habit of reviewing their week’s study using a revision guide/workbook and/or the electronic textbook available via Kerboodle (see below). They should then see their teacher (outside of class is fine) to tackle any areas of misunderstanding.
All students are issued with a username and password for Kerboodle, which provides a complete electronic copy of the course textbook used in class, together with worksheets, videos and animations. Fallibroome’s “institution code” (required to log in) is nrs0.
Students may wish to obtain paper copies of textbooks in addition to the Kerboodle digital version. This is not required and is entirely optional. Suitable course textbooks are any of the following:
This is the textbook used in class
This is the textbook made available to the students in digital format via Kerboodle
Revision Guides and Workbooks
Revision guides and workbooks are also entirely optional, but some students find them useful. During the first term of Year 10, we process orders for the books below, as the school can purchase them at a discounted price compared to the retail price in shops. However, there are many others available (e.g. from WHSmith, Waterstones, Amazon) and there is very little difference between them.

Past Examination Papers
Completing and then reviewing past exam paper questions is the best preparation for the students’ own exams.
This paper covers Biology topics 1–4: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics. These sections are described on pages 16 to 40 of the specification.
Specimen 2015 | Paper | Mark scheme
